The side cutting edge angle of the style B tool provides a gradual entrance to the work for heavy or interrupted cuts. The lead angle allows initial impact of the cut to start at a distance well back of the point of the tip where there is adequate support for the forces encountered.

The style D tools may be used for finish turning, chamfering or boring in either right or left hand directions. They are ideal for profiling where the reentrant angles are not less than 45° . To use the tool in a 45° boring bar a slight modifying grind is required.
