Type HB - Hollo-Bolt® for Blind Connection
to Structural Steel and Structural Tube

The Type HB Hollo-Bolt is a product for connecting to square, rectangular or circular structural tube or to conventional steel where access is available from one side only. The Hollo-Bolt offers a reduction in installation time over traditional connection methods such as welding, drilling and tapping holes or unsightly strapping. The Hollo-Bolt gives the specifier confidence and peace of mind with guaranteed safe working loads and a 5:1 factor of safety. For aggressive environments the Hollo-Bolt has a HDG corrosion protection finish, alternatively the product is available in stainless steel.

The patented five part 5/8" (M16) and 3/4" (M20) sizes feature a collapse mechanism to maximize clamping force and enable use in primary moment connections.

Typical Hollo-Bolt applications include the connection or suspension of:

  • Primary Steel
  • Secondary steel
  • Material Handling Equipment
  • Lifting Equipment
  • Wall Ties
  • Cladding
  • Curtain Walling
  • Electrical Equipment
  • Blast Walling
  • HVAC Equipment
  • Fire Protection Systems

  • This five part bolt configuration is used with the larger holes

**While the minimum fixing thickness for M16/M20 is 5/16", it is important that the outer ply is at least 5/16" to maximize shear capabilities. Where the outer ply is below 5/16" thickness, spacer washers should be used beneath the collar to increase to 8mm.

The tensile strength of a connection using the Hollo-Bolt may be governed by the structural steel to which it is connected. The tensile value shown above is the tensile strength of the Hollo-Bolt itself. Please consult a structural engineer to check the capacity of your structural steel. Please contact LNA Solutions for test results of some other common structural tube sections.

Hole Preparation

Some care must be taken both in preparation of the drilled hole for the product and in the location of the hole with regard to the structural tube section. The table below gives guidelines for:

(X) - minimum distance between hole centers for neighboring Hollo-Bolts,
(Y) - minimum distance of hole center from inside wall of hollow section steel
(Z) - drill size to be used .

The diagram on the left illustrates these dimensions.

Hollo-Bolt Hole Preparation
Product Code  X (Min)  Y(Min) Z Hole Size  Minimum Edge
Distance = (Y + T)
LHB08 1-3/8" 1/2" 9/16" 11/16"
LHB10 1-9/16" 9/16" 3/4" 7/8"
LHB12 2" 3/4" 13/16" 1"
LHB16 2-3/16" 13/16" 1-1/8" 1-5/16"
LHB20 2-3/4" 1" 1-3/8" 1-5/16"

Installing the Hollo-Bolt

Perhaps Hollo-Bolt’s greatest advantage is the ease with which the product can be installed. Detailed below are the three simple installation stages.

  1. Drill holes in required position (see hole preparation table above for recommended hole size). Position the Hollo-Bolt and fixture to the steel (the example pictured above shows steel angle). Insert product through both fixture and steel, cone end first.

  2. Grip the Hollo-Bolt collar with an open ended wrench. Using a torque wrench, tighten the central bolt to the recommened torque given in the table on the previous page.

  3. The Hollo-Bolt cone is drawn up into the body, spreading the product's legs and providing a secure connection.

Note: When installing, ensure that the Hollo-Bolt collar is held firmly against the fixture throughout the installation process.

For ease of installatin please use pneumatic tools on primary structural connections.
